Avistar Granted Patent for Real-Time Bandwidth Management

Patent technology maximizes bandwidth utilization as businesses increasingly adopt VoIP, audio/videoconferencing, and other unified communications features

San Mateo, Calif., June 30, 2010 -- Avistar Communications Corp. (www.avistar.com), a leader in unified visual communications solutions, today announced it has been granted a U.S. patent (US 7,738,492) in practical real-time bandwidth management, which increasingly is a critical feature in successful unified communications environments that utilize VoIP, video and instant messaging.

The patent addresses a unified bandwidth manager that hierarchically manages a group of service-specific bandwidth reservation and session management systems such as VoIP, two-way video, etc. that are commonly found in unified communications deployments. Until now, IT administrators had reservation/management systems that controlled blocks of bandwidth, often resulting in traffic overload in one system that slowed applications, diminished user experiences and wasted unused bandwidth in each block.

The newly granted patent covers the use of an automatic adaptive control system that provides traffic feedback and controls on an ongoing basis, thereby optimizing the network through potential network bottlenecks, server traffic, streaming one-way video and other enterprise real-time applications.
